Lighting the Way
Smart Design : Episode SDN-201 -- More Projects »
Today's lanterns are doing something totally new--they're illuminating interiors. A step away from the gas lanterns of years ago, today's styles bring a contemporary approach to a traditional concept. - In early America, gas lanterns carried on horses were the only form of outdoor light. We moved from gas to electric lanterns, and then they went on either side of the front or back door.
- The trends in lanterns represent a broader trend in home decor--the move from the outdoors in. With the advent of building sunrooms onto homes and enclosing patios, outdoor furniture, accessories and lighting came inside.
Although popular, brass is not the only finish available in lanterns. Look for painted finishes, which are coated for indoor/outdoor use (figure A).
Due to the glass casing that defines lanterns, they emanate a unique type of light, affecting the whole look of a room. Choose from seeded, beveled, clear or even water glass that can show off, hide or distort the bulbs as desired. Like many decorative items, lanterns can be displayed individually or in groups for a powerful effect. Update a lantern by putting tin appliques on the outside (figure B).
