A ceramic bowl, cheese grater and colander are three items that can be fashioned into a lamp.
Artist Chris Mobley shows how to create cool lamps with ordinary items that can be found throughout the home.

Materials:

drill
1/2-inch masonry drill bit
suitable household item (cheese grater, salad bowl, colander or a terra-cotta flowerpot)
light-fixture kit
pliers

Steps:

  1. Use the drill bit to drill a hole through the center of the object. The drill bit is made for materials like porcelain and cement, so it should take several minutes but it won't shatter the object.

  • Follow the directions on the light-fixture kit, running the wire through the hole (figure A).

  • Tighten the assembly, using pliers if necessary (figure B). Hang as you would any hanging light fixture.

  • The same formula applies to fixtures that will be displayed on a table, such as a candleholder (figure C). You'll need a gasket that will fit the hole that you've made in the candlestick for the light-fixture kit.
