Host Kathi Cardinalli demonstrates how to create some stunning lampshades with luxurious black velvet and eyelash fabrics.
Materials:
mat board scrap or other stiff art paper
cutting mat
square-shaped wire lampshade frames
pencil
craft knife
luxurious fabrics (cotton velvet, eyelash fabric, silks, sheers, etc.)
metal ruler
fabric marker or chalk
scissors
hot-glue gun
wooden clothespins
lamp bases to work with finished shade
fabric trims (that work with shade fabrics)
Steps:
- Place scrap board or art paper on cutting mat.
- Trace around sides of wire lampshade frame with pencil (figure A).
- Cut shapes out with a craft knife to use as templates for cutting fabrics.
- Spread chosen fabric on flat surface with right side of fabric down.
- Lay templates on fabric and trace around using chalk or fabric marker.
- Cut out each piece of fabric, adding 1/4-inch extra around the entire piece.
- With hot-glue gun and beginning at top of wire frame, attach each panel of fabric to the shade frame, overlapping where edges meet (figure B).
- Turn fabric under to inside at top and bottom. Use clothespins to anchor fabric while you are working.
- Cover side edges, top and bottom of shade with decorative trims, using the hot-glue gun (figure C).
- Place the shade over the lamp base and light.
