Track Lighting Basics

Room by Room : Episode RXR-1406 -- More Projects »
Matt Fox gives these basic tips when working with track lighting:
  • The highlights of installing this type of lighting include: Turn off the circuit at the panel, make all connections at the ceiling box according to the instructions , install the track, and then try a fixture before moving forward. Keep connecting track and installing, trying fixtures along the way to make sure the track and the connections are working.
  • Another aspect to track lighting is the switch used. When adding this much light to a space, give yourself the option to dim it. The formula for selecting a dimmer is to multiply the number of fixtures by the wattage in each. Select a dimmer that is closest but not under your total wattage. For example, the featured project had 11 fixtures with 65-watt bulbs in each for a total of 715 watts. The dimmer needs to handle a minimum of the total wattage and since they come in 600, 1000 1500 and 2000 watts, the 1000-watt dimmer was selected.
