Cut part of a gate and mica to make a soft wall sconce.
Materials:

grate from a security gate
old ornate metal pieces
opaque mica
cable
lighting kit
various pliers
screwdrivers
metal sheers
bolt cutters
work gloves

Steps:

  1. Cut out a backing piece from the gate in desired size and shape. Wear gloves since the backing is sharp and use needle-nose pliers to separate pieces of cable from a salvage yard. Choose the backing side that will show and attach one end of the thin cable to the front in a semi-circular shape. Secure the opposite end by twisting a small piece of wire around it with pliers. Repeat until a holder for the shade is formed.
  2. Attach the lamp kit with screws and a nut, and then add a light bulb (the kit won't show once the shade is in place).
  3. Make a cardboard template for the shade and cut the mica out after tracing it with an X-acto knife and ruler. Score the shade from each of the top corners to the bottom point, being careful not to cut all the way through the mica.
  4. Use a ruler to bend the mica along the scored lines. Add metal adornment(s) and slide the shade into the cable holder.
