Floor Lamps

Smart Design : Episode SDN-307 -- More Projects »
Floor lamps are the latest bright idea in design with great new styles. Linda Denenberg describes which type of floor lamp is best for the type of lighting needed. Christopher Ralston and Douglas Burton also show a few unusual pieces.

Torchiers provide light that shines up onto a ceiling and bounces off for general room illumination.

With lighting, the rule is to do a lot of layering in your room. If there is a dark corner, put a lamp with a shade there or add a torchier if there isn't a lot of general light.

These rubber lamps are very flexible and can lean low or high against any flat wall space.

For something fun and funky, use a yellow painted bulb covered in silicone. This is a pricey bulb, but it's definitely a conversation starter.
Light bulb choices can give a room a glamorous glow or a funky flicker:

  • Handpainted bulbs are not only fun, they give off a soft light. Plus, when put behind a white shade, you can still see the pattern.

  • Using a blue bulb will filter out all the harsh yellow light in a room, making everything crisp and clean.

  • A black light is great for parties because it makes anything white glow in the dark.

  • Want a room to be filled with romantic candlelight? A flicker bulb will imitate the look of a candle.
