From Ordinary to Festive

Most homes have practical, work-a-day surfaces that are just waiting to be transformed by holiday whimsy and warmth:
  • There are all sorts of places to decorate that we normally don't think of. Cover a pot rack with greens and ornaments, bring in an iron planter from outside and fill it with holiday blooms or miniature decorated trees, and place wrapped gifts on chairs or cluster them on a bookcase for additional impact (figure A).
  • Cover a sideboard usually used to hold dishes with favorite collections like beaded fruit in a bowl and homemade snowmen. Tie the whole look together with a mix of fresh and artificial greens.
  • The old fashioned feeling that comes from natural greens and berries is warm and welcoming, plus it works in almost any decor.

  • To raise the eye, cover a chandelier with fresh greens and small ornaments. Make sure that the source of the heat is far enough from the greens and ribbons for safety purposes.
  • Paint a terra-cotta pot, and then fill it with fresh cranberries (they're not flammable) and a candle for an inexpensive yet stylish gift idea (figure B) .
