Light Fantastic Smart Design : Episode SDN-103 -- More Projects »
For centuries, the chandelier has been a hallmark of elegant, old world styling . They were large and impressive but today, chandeliers are scaled down and casually elegant. - Chandeliers are a decorative element of lighting and they're a way to change the mood of a room.
- Modern chandeliers have cast off some classic conventions and are not afraid to integrate the cords into their design (figure A).
- Today you can find chandeliers in organic forms such as clear, smoked or sandblasted glass in vivid colors.
The chandelier's renaissance is not just in design and manufacture, but also in where they are placed. Hang them in the entry, bedroom, powder room, closets or the kitchen (figure B).
Found Objects as Chandeliers As chandelier designs become more popular, lighting designers have become more creative. They're working with recycled treasures that come together in inventive and original ways: - Found object chandeliers are one of the most creative ways to add shine, humor and character to a room. They make people smile because they're objects that are very ordinary being used in an extraordinary way (figure C).
- Potential objects can come from flea markets, auctions, attics, basements, street curbs and donations from friends and family. What makes things interesting is putting a valuable item next to something inexpensive.
The range of objects that can be used to make these whimsical creations allows a designer to work with any theme. A kitchen chandelier designed for a chef who wanted old utensils to be used has a center silver pitcher with an egg beater, potato masher, flour sifter, stove grill, rolling pins, etc. holding flickering bulbs that mimic flames (figure D).
Whether simple or elaborate, each found object fixture is guaranteed unique. These unusual lighting designs can hang anywhere you like--bathrooms, kitchens, lobbies, hallways, basements, barns, workshops, boathouses, etc. For simpler accents, stuff a riding boot and stamp a matching shade or glue a teapot to a painted base paired with a whimsical shade (figure E). Have an electrician wire them if necessary.
