Use an old ship's wheel to add a nautical flavor to a dining area.
Materials:

ship's wheel
sandpaper
paintbrush
polyurethane
industrial-strength glue
brass chain
brass eye hooks
glass votive candleholders
votive candles
drill with paddle bit
pliers or vise grips

Steps:

  1. Clean and sand the wheel. Apply a coat of polyurethane for a lustrous finish .
  2. Once dry, drill holes into the base of each handle. Screw a brass eyehook into each hole and tighten them with vise grips.
  3. Evenly space votive candleholders around the wheel, and then glue them in place .
  4. After the glue dries, attach chain pieces to each eyehook. Cut and pry open the bottom link of the chain to slip it through the eyehook. Close the gap in the link with vise grips to secure it.
  5. Gather the chains and use another piece to join them together by prying open the bottom link and slipping the top links in of the other chains. Use vise grips to close the gap.
