To update the lighting in the kitchen, Valencich starts by replacing the bulbs in the pendant lights with frosted ones. Frosted bulbs are an inexpensive way to reduce the glare and soften the lighting in the eating area. To brighten up the dark cabinets, they replace the wood shelves with glass ones. The light is able to stream all the way through the cabinet and give them a warm glow. For nighttime drama, they add low-voltage Xenon light strips on top of the cabinets. In addition, the lighting is put on dimmers to extend bulb life and save electricity.
