Kitty Bartholomew meets with the designers of the Pasadena Showcase house, a 1915 Palladian villa re-created to look like an elegant home from northern Italy.

Two different spaces were created in the 30' x 40' entry hall. A round table just inside the front door directs guests through the space.

All of the elaborate woodwork is painted in a light bone color in an eggshell finish. Ordinarily, a high-gloss sheen is seen on trim and molding but since the woodwork in this home wasn't in great shape, a low-sheen finish was used to help mask the imperfections.

The walls are decorated with thirty-six drawings, all of the same artist and all framed exactly the same. The symmetry of the displays creates a subtle focal point around the room.

The homeowners didn't want to paint the woodwork in the drawing room, even though painted moldings and trim would have been typical in an Italian house. So, he used a lot of white creamware in the bookcases to bring the lightness down on the walls.

Design elements that help create the look of an Italian kitchen include: the color palette of terra-cotta, green and gold, scrollwork designs, wrought-iron accessories and colorful pottery.

The beautiful view outside the window dictated a double-sided sofa. It's essentially two sofas paired up back to back with a one-piece slipcover that fits over both.

To create this interesting window treatment, designer Michael Berman used railroad ties to hold the iron clip rings on each drape. Click the image for a closer look.

This custom bed fits a double-size mattress on both the bottom and top bunk.

Included in this custom design is ample storage space and a pull-out writing desk.
