Playwright Eugene O'Neill (see photo at top right) was world famous, though he shunned the spotlight and moved with his wife to this remote California home to avoid publicity. It was built in the traditional Monterey style, with Bakelite bricks and a clay tile roof.

"He was a very private man, who was deeply, deeply involved with creating his plays. In order to do this, he needed quiet and isolation and this is what he and his wife, Carlotta, found when they came here in 1937 and bought this property," said Jim Kantor, a docent for the Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site.

O'Neill was fascinated with the Orient, as is evident in the Chinese characters on the gate (figure A), colors in the rooms, and Chinese Fu Dogs (figure B). It was here that O'Neill wrote his masterpiece, Long Day's Journey Into Night. He would eventually become the only American playwright to win the Nobel Prize.
