Benton was known for his entertaining evenings. In addition to the great food prepared by his wife, Rita, friends were always treated to the art of conversation. The evening's festivities culminated in the living room (figure A), where his zest for life was on display. Here, authors, artists and musicians turned weekend gatherings at the Bentons' into legendary events.
It was in his studio (figure B) located behind the home, where Benton's research and creativity became one. In 1939, he converted an old limestone and shingle carriage house into his rough-and-ready workshop. Adding a large north-facing window, he painted using only nature's light. From sunrise to sunset, Benton worked tirelessly in his sanctuary, creating poignant scenes chronicling American life.
