Thomas Hart Benton House

Thomas Hart Benton captured the American spirit with his colorful paintings of everyday life. His career spanned seven decades, making him one of America's premier muralists of the 20th century.

At the center of his life was his Missouri home--a comfortable haven that rooted him to the Midwest and the American scenes that inspired his work.

As a young man, Benton left his native Missouri to attend some of the most prestigious art schools in America and Europe. But the sophisticated art world left him disillusioned and yearning for a simpler life and a stable home in which he could raise a family.

In 1939, Benton purchased a two-story home in a fashionable Kansas City neighborhood. Built in 1903, the turn-of-the-century home featured an eclectic blend of American and European architectural designs.

Constructed with Missouri limestone, the sturdy 16-room home gave Benton a firm foundation for the last 36 years of his life. The home's open floor plan and comfortable design became the perfect place for him to showcase his work and entertain many friends.

Benton was known for his entertaining evenings. In addition to the great food prepared by his wife, Rita, friends were always treated to the art of conversation. The evening's festivities culminated in the living room (figure A), where his zest for life was on display. Here, authors, artists and musicians turned weekend gatherings at the Bentons' into legendary events.

It was in his studio (figure B) located behind the home, where Benton's research and creativity became one. In 1939, he converted an old limestone and shingle carriage house into his rough-and-ready workshop. Adding a large north-facing window, he painted using only nature's light. From sunrise to sunset, Benton worked tirelessly in his sanctuary, creating poignant scenes chronicling American life.
