Springtime Bedroom

This bedroom's warm tones make it very cozy in the wintertime but it needs lighter touches when the warm weather arrives.

There's a lot of fall decorating that can be replaced or covered up to brighten this bedroom for spring:

This is a good time of year to flip the mattress. Rotate it one quarter counter clockwise. Flip it over onto the other side, and then rotate it another quarter turn counter clockwise.

When decorating, start with the bedspread or comforter. Look for colors that will brighten the space while coordinating with the existing wall colors. For a lighter spring look, expose the sheets and duvet lining, which will only allow a portion of the duvet and darker dust ruffle to show. Soften the hard edges of a wooden footboard with a textured coverlet (figure A).

Remove the doors of an armoire and hang sheers on a tension rod to lighten the piece. This still allows for easy access without such a dark tone.

Replace darker pull-down shades with cream pleated shades, which will diffuse the light and cut down on glare. Add a topper made out of the same fabric as the duvet cover. Sew a rectangular loop of fabric with a rod pocket on top and fill it with plastic bags to bring it out from the window, adding dimension and interest (figure B).
