Figure C
Materials:

Rustoleum spray paint (Sand #7771)
glaze
chocolate brown oil-based paint
Minwax spray wood toner (Special Walnut)
drop cloth, sheet plastic, or old shower curtain for floor protection
stiff whisk brush or broom
Optional: tubes of various artist acrylic colors, small white bristle brushes, small plastic trays, can of mineral spirits

Steps:

  1. Take the piece to be finished outside and out of direct sunlight. Clean it well with a brush, removing any dust or dirt.
  2. Place it on the drop cloth. Spray the whole piece lightly with spray paint, making sure to get the undersides. Several light coats are always better than one heavy coat. Let dry two to three hours between coats and overnight after the final one.
  3. Apply a 50/50 glaze mixture of glaze and brown paint with a chip brush. Repeat this step as necessary in order to create the desired degree of darkness (figure A). Let it sit three to four hours between coats and overnight after the final coat.
  4. Spray the piece with three coats of toner, letting each coat dry two hours before adding the next (figure B). Let the piece sit overnight after the final coat.
  5. If desired, add some color details to the piece by squeezing some acrylic colors onto a tray. Use a bristle brush to lightly add some color to the tops of individual wicker cords (figure C). The key is to add only the faintest of color, allowing most of the background to show through. Use a napkin or rag to remove some of the wet oil color if it's too heavy. Use mineral spirits to clean the brush.

Note: Remember to always dispose of used spirits properly. If in doubt, contact the local waste disposal agency.
