Materials:

Krylon spray-on latex paint*
unpainted wicker item
craft paper
masking tape

* The latest spray-on latex paints are odorless, non-toxic and water-soluble for easy clean-up.

Steps:

  1. Clean and dust the wicker.
  2. Optional step: Prime the wicker with a neutral color. Although not required, an undercoat of a neutral color gives the top coat better coverage and more intense color while requiring less paint.
  3. Shake the spray-paint can thoroughly for about two minutes, first in an up-and-down motion and then in a circular motion. Before spraying the wicker item, test spray on a practice surface. Paint the wicker with a slow, even back-and-forth motion. Begin and stop spraying off the sides of the item for best coverage, and shake the can again every minute or so. The paint will be dry to the touch in 15 minutes and dry enough for another coat in an hour.
  4. Try two-color painting, if desired. After the first coat has dried completely, use craft paper and tape to mask all areas that will not be painted the second color. If the wicker has a pre-woven design, stick small pieces of tape around the design until the surrounding area is completely masked, then apply a second coat as before. Attach paper and tape behind any open-weave areas to keep the paint from spraying through.
