To select high-quality upholstered furniture, decorator Sue Pelley says to begin with the part of the furniture you never see - the inside construction. Look for hardwoods throughout, sinuous springs, eight-way hand-tied coils, and double-doweled, glued and screwed corners. These are the marks of exceptional internal construction and are essential elements for maximum strength.

Cushioning options are usually selected based on personal preference; so if a softer, more cushy "seat" is desired, down cushions would be the answer. For a firmer seat, various styles of foam cushioning could be selected.

Finally, inspect the fabric pattern to certify that it is matched throughout the piece.
