Figure A
Judy Schindler shares some interesting information about reupholstering furniture :
  • People like to reupholster items that are family pieces with sentimental value, if they like the style or construction of the piece or if it's a collectible.
  • The basic reupholstering process starts with removing all the staples and tacks. Next, the fabric and padding is removed to reveal the construction of the frame . If necessary, parts are glued and clamped to dry for 24 hours. The springs are then put in and tied (figure A) and the webbing is put onto the back of the piece. Padding and fabric is added using the original fabric as a template. Finally, decorative nails finish the look.
  • Furniture can be reconstructed or have its style changed as long as the framework is there for tacking. Skirts can be added or removed and the legs can be boxed or upholstered to completely change the final style.
