Furniture with Two Uses

Room by Room : Episode RXR-1103 -- More Projects »
Shari Hiller chooses furniture pieces that can do double duty:
  • The dining table can also be used as a desk--it provides a little more surface area and is more stylish.
  • A china cabinet with covered storage below can hold anything for the office (binders, books and sales materials) but decorative items make more sense in the glass portion above.
  • Instead of holding entertainment items, a large armoire conceals a fax machine, copy machine, printer, etc.

Purchasing Wood Furniture

When purchasing wood furniture, design consultant Brian Sleamon offers the following tips:

  • Look for style, aesthetic value and function. Consider if it will work for you, if it pleases you and if it will perform as it needs to.
  • Consider the finish: solid wood vs. veneer. Veneer is the laying out of several layers of wood, which allows for decorative patterns, strength and durability. Solid wood is several blocks of wood glued together side by side for strength. The grain of the wood on a solid piece continues right off the edge.
