Artist Sheila McGraw shares how to give a romantic look to a bedroom vanity with decoupage cutouts and paintable caulking.
Materials:
shoe insoles
glaze
paint
scissors
craft knife
paper
4" roller
spray adhesive
paintbrushes
Steps:
- Use a thin paintbrush to create a vine (or vines) on the table for the ivy to follow.
- Trace or draw ivy leaves on the insoles (make them various sizes, if desired) and cut out with small craft scissors.
- Score the foam side of each ivy leaf with a craft knife to create veins.
- Cut a piece of paper to fit the circumference and width of the roller. Trace the paper onto brown craft paper (a shopping bag will also work).
- Arrange the ivy leaves inside the traced area, foam side down. Spray the adhesive on the leaves and allow to set for about a minute.
- Remove the roller from the handle and firmly press the roller over the leaves (figure A) until they are all attached.
- Slightly dampen the leaves and begin to apply various shades of green paint with a paintbrush. Try not to let any paint drip onto the roller. Carefully slide the roller back on the handle.
- Position the roller in the center of the vine on the tabletop and roll on the leaves (figure B).
- Finish the design by adding tendrils along the vine.
