Ordinary terra-cotta pots can be used for an informal coffee table, perfect for a patio or sunroom.
Turn large terra-cotta pots from a garden center or flea market into a coffee table for your home.

Materials:

large terra-cotta pots (2 for coffee table, 1 for end table)
glass top, cut to fit
newspapers
sand
fish netting
seashells
dried moss
small wire or fish line

Steps:
  1. Crumple up newspapers and place into the pot filling it to about six to eight inches from the top. Make sure the newspaper is packed down well, because the weight of the sand will push them down into the pot.
  2. Pour sand on top of the newspapers until they are completely covered, approximately 16 to 24 cups.
  3. Arrange shells or any other items you would like in the top of the pot. Fill in any gaps with the dried moss.
  4. Lay the fish netting on top of the pot, allowing some of it to hang down over the sides.
  5. Tie shells onto the netting with small wire or fishing line. Some shells already have holes in them naturally, while others you might need to carefully punch yourself.
  6. Cover the table with glass cut to fit. Make sure that when you select the glass, it is the proper thickness (about 1/4 inch) and that the dealer has ground and polished the edges.

Tips:

  • Use strawberry pots and let silk ivy spill from the holes in the pot and out the top.
  • Items other than seashells can be used to embellish the terra-cotta pots. Try dried flowers, Christmas lights or souvenirs!
