Steps:
- Find the tabletop's center (an unfinished 24-inch round top is featured). An easy way to do this is to cut a piece of paper to size and fold it in quarters. Open it up and the center point will be where the folds intersect. Mark the point with a nail. If the top has an old finish, remove it completely or prime well.
- Draw a circle in desired size and small sunrays all the way around it (figure A).
- Use a jigsaw to cut out the design and sand all edges well. Remove dust with a tack cloth.
- Apply the charred silver base coat with foam roller.
- Add the Aquasize with a foam roller and let it tack up--approximately 10 to 20 minutes.
- Apply the silver foil by first crumpling it up. Lay it onto the Aquasize and push hard to transfer the foil (figure B). Continue until satisfied with the pattern.
- Mix Aquacreme with Aquacolors Silver, Black and Dark Brown (about 30 percent of each color to one equal part of Aquacreme).
- Brush on and rub mixture onto the background foil with a cloth to add an aged patina look (figure C).
- Apply one coat of Aquagard and let dry.
- Install fluorescent lamp lens (available at hardware stores in 2' x 4' sheets). Cut material with a band saw if necessary. Adhere it with a silicone base or small mounting clips (figure D).
- Place store-bought or custom-cut glass rounder on top to protect the finish and keep things from falling through the lens.
- Stain the table apron and let dry. Attach a small battery-operated light to the apron of the tabletop.
