Video: Fill empty wall space with a shelf to hold favorite photos or collections.
Materials:

1x6 oak lumber
speed square
circular saw
router
champhered bit
220-grit sandpaper
rags
tack cloth
stain
foam brushes
polyurethane
pencil
level
2 store-bought molding shelves
self-anchoring Molly bolts
drill
screws

Steps:

1. Cut the oak lumber into a six-foot length. To get a straight cut, align the saw blade to the cut point, and then make the cut by holding the saw guide against a speed square.
2. To add detail, position the speed square for a 45-degree angle and make a cut so that you remove a 2x2-inch wedge from each front corner of the shelf. Use a router and a champhered bit to create a beveled detail along the ends and the front. Sand it smooth and remove the dust with a tack cloth or damp rag.
3. Stain the board as desired and apply two coats of polyurethane for protection once dry.

4. Place the board upside down on the work surface and mark the center. Drill pilot holes in the outer edge of each shelf (figure A), and then screw the two shelves to the board five inches to either side of the center mark.
5. Hold the shelf against the wall with a level on top to determine its placement. Set it aside until self-anchoring Molly bolts are secured to the wall to hold the two support shelves.
