Materials:
4 pieces of scrap wood cut into 4' lengths
3 shelves
scrap wood for top and base
wood trim
2 hinges
screws
screwdriver
hammer
finishing nails
wood stain
paintbrush
glass knob
pencil
square
Steps:
- Nail the three pieces of wood together at the corners, and then work up each side, hammering in at least four or five nails per side.
- Attach two blocks of wood to fit the top and bottom, which creates an open box .
- Mark the position of the shelves (approximately one foot apart). Make sure the shelves are level using a square and gently tap them into place. Secure them by hammering nails in from the outside into each one.
- For a finished look, add two more pieces of wood to the bottom as a base and top (figure A). The bottom piece should be a little larger than the middle one to draw the eye upward, focusing attention on the cabinet.
- If desired, add additional wood trim around the top and base to finish the piece .
- Use a dark wood stain on the entire cabinet for a warm look (be sure to also stain the fourth length of wood, which will be the door).
- Once dry, secure the fourth piece with two hinges.
- Install a small magnet and metal attaching plate so the door stays shut (figure B). Add a glass knob to the door.
