Add character to a plain unfinished Japanese paper screen with stain and shellac.
Materials:

Japanese paper screen
orange shellac
stain (regular and spray)
stain marker pens

Steps:

1. Brush orange shellac over the back of the paper screen as desired. The paper will absorb it so apply several coats as needed, leaving some bare spots for a mottled effect.

2. Paint screen frame with stain/stain pens as desired. Let dry.

3. Use a light-colored spray stain to paint the inner dividers of the frame and to add dimension to the paper areas. Let dry.

4. Tap a brush with stain on it over your wrist to create a speckled effect over the screen. Let dry.
