Figure E
Host Kathi Cardinalli shows how to use fabric to create a decorative bookshelf cover-up (see photo at right).

Materials:

pinking shears
yardage of medium-weight cotton fabric
adhesive hook-and-loop tape
wooden bookshelf unit
kraft paper
foam-core board
scissors
craft knife
metal ruler
cloth tape
silver paint staple gun
metallic gold paint
table-tennis balls
toothpicks

Steps:

  1. Use pinking shears to cut out a zigzag pattern in the fabric or curtain.

  2. Use a leftover piece to make a zigzag valance.

  3. Attach adhesive hook-and-loop tape to the front of the curtain top and to the top of the valance (figure A).

  4. Stick the valance to the top of the curtain.

  5. Apply the soft side of the hook-and-loop tape to the top of the bookshelf and the looped side to the top back of the curtain.

  6. Stick the curtain to the top of the bookshelf (figure B).

  7. Draw a template for the crown on kraft paper.

  8. Cut foam-core board to the pattern (black was used on the show)--a large front piece and two small end pieces (figure C).

  9. Score foam-core crown with a craft knife so that it makes a "hinge" that allows the foam core to stand up (figure D).

  10. Cut out a corner notch on each side piece, then fit the sidepieces onto the front piece. Secure with cloth tape at the edge.

  11. Paint the front surfaces of the crown with stripes of silver paint (figure E). Let dry.

  12. Paint table-tennis balls with metallic gold paint, let dry, and attach them to points of the crown with toothpicks.
