Attach rice paper to a pre-made screen frame for an elegant room divider.

Materials:

wooden three-panel folding screen frame
latex primer
black laquer latex paint
rice paper of choice
1" square-bead molding
tape measure
paper and pencil
wooden glue
tacks
hammer
high-gloss latex finish

Steps:

  1. Remove any material from inside three-panel folding screen frame.
  2. If the frame is not painted, prime with latex primer. Let dry. If frame is painted, strip and sand old paint, then prime and let dry.
  3. In a well-ventilated area, spray-paint first coat of lacquer. Let dry. Apply another coat of paint. Continue to apply paint until satisfied with the coverage.
  4. Add a layer of glaze and set the frame aside.
  5. On a piece of paper, plan design for the inside of the frames.
  6. Measure the inside area of the frame and cut bead molding to size.
  7. Glue and clamp together. Let the glue set up and finish off with tacks.
  8. Cut rice paper to size of the bead molding frames.
  9. Once satisfied with the frames, apply double-sided tape to the flat side of the bead molding (figure A).
  10. Press rice paper to the inside of the frames (figure B).
