Designer Shirley Horowitz shares these tips for room screens:
- Screens hide things that you don't want people to see plus they look beautiful.
- Use screens to divide rooms. In the 18th century in England, people were taxed for the number of rooms that they had, so they often used screens to divide rooms and therefore, pay less taxes.
- Black lacquered screens make beautiful accents to a room. They are painted with many layers of paint, lacquered, and then carved to reveal the colors. Use this type of screen as a headboard or in a corner that's difficult to decorate.
- Take some hinges off of larger screens and use the pieces separately.
- Needlepoint screens were used on a table to protect a woman's wax makeup. Since they aren't used that way now, place one in a corner that needs a touch of class or by a fireplace (figure A).
- Old iron pieces can be used as fireplace screens (figure B). Or, place a plant behind it for a touch of color and texture.
- Handpainted French screens add a lot of color to a room. They are nice in a living room or use in a bedroom to provide a private dressing area (figure C).
- Contemporary, solid-colored screens make a nice backdrop for a piece of sculpture.
- Combine a screened section for a bed to provide interest and texture (figure D).
