Figure D
Renai Ellison creates a faux ceramic tile tabletop. This is a beginner-level project that takes very little time but will provide an earthy, natural-looking tabletop for both indoor and outdoor use.

Materials:

art paper
scissors
pre-painted tabletop (taupe paint is used in this project)
polyurethane
neutral and charcoal glazes (mixed together)
sponge brush
damp sponge
polyurethane sealer (optional)

Steps:

  1. Choose several different types of art papers that look like stone and are textured (figure A).

  2. Cut the paper into irregular stone shapes.

  3. Arrange the paper shapes on the tabletop (figure B). Be sure to keep similarly shaped and colored stones varied and not bunched together.

  4. Once you have an idea where you want them to be, remove them, then spread polyurethane across a section of the tabletop.

  5. Place the stones back on the treated section of table, making sure to press down all sides of the stone shape.

  6. Add extra polyurethane to corners that curl (figure C).

  7. Once the polyurethane has dried, the tabletop will take shape. Tone down the color by applying a glaze with a damp sponge (figure D). The idea is to create a rustic, dimensional look, rather than a clean, crisp look.

  8. Apply two or three coats of polyurethane sealer if you want to use the table in both indoor or outdoor areas.
