Decorator and designer Kelly Roland Warren shows a girl's room that has been decorated with handpainted furniture, using pastels and a flower garden motif
(figures A and B).
She explains how easily this look can be achieved with secondhand furniture and unusual items with which to decorate.
Wall Mural
Materials:
wall paint (blue and white)
craft paint (purple, pink and green)
paintbrushes
Steps:
- Start with any shade of blue for the original wall color, then whitewash the wall with rounded strokes with a combination of white paint and water (figure C). This muted white and blue is the sky.
- Once the wall has dried, it's time to add the grass (figure D). Use sweeping brushstrokes and don't worry about strict detail, as this mural serves as the background for the picket fence.
- When the green paint dries, add some pink and purple flowers. Again, little splashes of color with little detail works best. Insects can be added with flexible stamp rub-ons. Colors and insects can vary.
- Once the scene is set, it's time to prepare the picket fence.
Picket Fence
Materials:
old, wooden fencing
dried flowers
staple gun
Steps:
- Find an old piece of fence, preferably from a used garden fence. The more rustic and weather-worn, the better.
- Staple dried flowers onto the fence posts (figure E). Select colors that might enhance the original mural or other fabrics in the bedroom.
