Figure C
Kathi Cardinalli's fertile imagination turns toward thoughts of oversize vegetables and painted-on furniture, and she demonstrates how easy it is to bring together that combination.

Materials:

craft paper
tracing wheel
tape
pouch of charcoal or graphite dust
medium flat artists' brush
acrylic paints (colors appropriate for the chosen vegetable)
black paint pen

Steps:

  1. Draw a large vegetable--host Cardinalli used an artichoke--on craft paper and trace it with a tracing wheel (figure A). Be sure to put another piece of paper under it.

  2. Place the perforated paper on the piece of furniture and tape in place.

  3. Take a pouch of charcoal or graphite dust and pounce the design onto the furniture (figure B).

  4. Begin to paint in the individual vegetable leaves, using a brush with a thin point (figure C). Use other colors as necessary to highlight.

  5. Use a paint pen to add shadows or highlights. Another option is to use a small pointed brush with black paint.
