Single-Door Ideas

Shari Hiller and Matt Fox provide several options beyond an expected wreath to make a welcoming statement at the front door:

Do something other than a round wreath by hanging a frame with fall foliage glued to it with beautiful ribbon (figure A).

Nestle a leaf-covered frame into a round stick wreath form and hot-glue nuts, twigs, pinecones and berries over the artwork for a welcoming autumnal display (figure B).

Enhance a rusty rake with autumn foliage, peacock feathers and silky ribbon to welcome guests in simple style (figure C).

Double-Door Ideas

Highlight the beauty of double doors by surrounding them with a variety of focal points:

Hunt for interesting objects at yard sales and flea markets like an old barrel dolly and milk crate that can be surrounded by pumpkins, gourds and a fall floral arrangement (figure D).

Keep the door itself simple with a light canopy of twigs and bittersweet above flanked by smaller wall decorations (figure E).

Stairs and Railings

Keep safety in mind when decorating these surfaces but be sure to incorporate them into the design plan:

Line old rusty yard sale items like buckets along the steps, adding color with pumpkins and greenery (figure F).

Put two mums close to each other on each step for a burst of color. Use silk flowers if that's easier. Combine gourds and pumpkins, of various sizes, with mums along the side of steps to showcase the signs of the season.
