Natural materials make great accents, especially when entertaining.
Moving to the canyons of California from big city New York inspired Creative Living expert Deborah Durham to use natural materials for a unique indoor/outdoor look. Here are some of her techniques:

Accents:

  • Glue bark to mirror frames with a hot glue gun. Durham uses eucalyptus bark that has peeled naturally.
  • Tie bark around an old water bottle with twine.
  • Use old pillowcases to cover damaged outdoor cushions. Slip them over the old cushions, with no sewing.
Entertaining:

  • Use a big wicker basket of fruit and/or vegetables for the centerpiece. Artichokes and persimmons are particularly nice.
  • Use cobalt blue water bottles as vases to display garden greens or function as candleholders.
  • Wrap cutlery for guests in new dishtowels, including a vanilla bean for scent, and fasten with twine.
