Host Kathi Cardinalli shows how to create sling chairs and other outdoor seating with treated fabrics.
Materials:
outdoor furniture items (pillows, sling chairs, cushions, etc.)
ruler
scissors
all-weather fabric
permanent fabric glue
chalk
tape measure
sticky-backed, heavy-duty hook-and-loop tape
Steps for pillows or cushion covers:
- Measure the size of the pillow and add about 1-1/2 inches all around for seam allowance. Cut two pieces for each pillow or cushion.
- Lay cut fabric on a flat surface with right sides together. Create a seam with fabric glue around three edges (figure A), leaving one side open. Let glue dry well.
- Turn fabric inside to outside and press flat (figure B). Insert cushion or pillow.
- Turn under open edges and glue down 1/4-inch from edges (figure C). Let dry well. It may help to iron flat before gluing.
- Cut strips of hook-and-loop tape and stick to the inside of the seam, with the hooked tape on one side and the looped tape on the other. Press together (figure D). You now have a water-resistant pillow or cushion cover.
Steps for canvas sling covers:
- Measure and cut outdoor fabric, using an old cover as a pattern.
- Hem all edges if necessary, then hem at the top and the bottom with glue. Insert rods at the top and bottoms of the chair, then put back together.
Tips
- Look for bright colors such as bright striped patterns that will add a modern, clean look to a garden area or patio.
- Mix colors and stripes for a more eclectic look, or use one color scheme with various stripe patterns to pull various nonmatching yard-furniture pieces together.
