clean damp cloth
clean dry rag
paint tray
paint roller with small roller pad
upholstery sheers
upholstery stapler
screw gun
cordless hand grinder

Materials:

3/4" birch plywood
wood glue
pin nails for nail gun
birch edge banding
180-grit sandpaper
oil-based wood stain (Safecoat DuroStain in Deep Ebony)
water-based polyurethane
2" foam
spray adhesive
synthetic leather
four 4-inch stainless steal table legs (Ikea, Capita)
two 30-inch piano hinges

Cut List for Plywood:

2 at 12"x3'
2 at 12"x34-1/2"
1 at 34-1/2"x34-1/2"
4 at 18"x18"
2 at 2"x34-1/2"

Steps:

1. Cut the plywood sheet using a table saw to the specified dimensions.
2. Glue and nail the 12-inch pieces to form a box. Glue and nail the 34-1/2-inch square piece to form the bottom.
3. Stack the two 34-1/2-inch by two inch pieces together. Glue and nail them together. Center them across the top of the box and glue and nail into place. This will provide a brace for your cushions when the ottoman is closed.
4. Apply the edge banding, according to the manufacturer's instructions. Lightly sand the piece with 180-grit sandpaper. Wipe off dust with a damp rag.
5. Use a clean rag to apply two coats of stain, according to the manufacturer's instructions. Let dry.
6. Apply three coats of water-based polyurethane, according to the manufacturer's instructions.
7. With upholstery sheers, cut the foam into four 18-1/4-inch squares. Attach the foam squares to the four 18-inch-square plywood backer boards with spray adhesive.
8. Cut four 24-inch squares out of the synthetic leather.

9. Lay the synthetic leather onto the foam covered backer boards. Flip and staple fabric down with an upholstery stapler, making sure to fold the corners over neatly (figure A).
10. Attach the legs to the bottom corners of the ottoman using a screw gun (figure B).
11. Lay both 30-inch piano hinges flat against a piece of wood (for a cutting surface) and cut them in half using a hand grinder. Finish by screwing the four 15-inch piano hinges into the top outer edges of the ottoman. Attach the seat cushions onto the secured hinges with a screw gun, so the cushions fold inward to close up the ottoman's center.
