Mosaic Serving Tray

For a simple, colorful accent to your kitchen, try creating a mosaic tray.

Colorful Serving Tray
Materials:

bed mortar
ceramic serving tray
ceramic tiles and/or plates
ceramic teapot or coffee cup
plastic bags

Tools:

hammer
trowel

1. Place the tiles or plates in a plastic bag and seal bag (figure A). With a hammer, carefully break tiles into small jagged pieces.
2. In the plastic bag, carefully break coffee cup or teapot making sure to keep the handle intact.

3. Fill the base of tray with bed mortar (figure B), according to the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure not to fill higher than trays handles.
4. Spread the mortar evenly with the trowel.
5. Place the broken ceramic handle in the center of the serving tray.

6. Arrange broken bits of tile and plates in desired pattern (figure C). Allow time for tiles to set in mortar before use.
