Figure B
Materials:

wainscoting
wood storage box
scrap wood
screws
finish nails
2 hinges

Steps:

1. Remove the top and one side of the box. Cut the pieces to create the second tier for the stool (figure A). Paint the pieces as desired and let dry.

2. Put the stool on its side and place a twelve-inch length of 1" x 4" over the gap to act as a bridge to join them. Screw the pieces together.

3. To make the face of each step, cut scrap wood to size to create two frames. Set the stool aside so the decorative wainscoting can be put on to the frames.

4. Cut the wainscoting into pieces to fit the frame and paint as desired. Once dry, set the first piece face down onto the back of one frame and nail it in place . Slide the second piece in next to the first and nail it on. Repeat until both frames are filled in.

5. Pre-cut a notch in the top frame to add style and to make opening/closing easier (figure B) or leave the edge straight if desired.

6. Set the frame for the bottom step in place and screw it on. Measure and cut a step out of scrap wood. Paint it to match and let dry. Check the fit and position of the step and top frame before attaching them. Once satisfied, screw the frame to the step, and then both sections to the stool.

7. Cut the stool lid to size from 1 x 4 wood and paint it to match. Join the lid to the stool with hinges once dry.

8. Cut four 1 x 4 pieces into four-inch lengths for the legs. Turn the stool over ; set a block into each corner, and then screw them on.
