Materials:
2 ends of shipping crate
scrap wood (1 x 2 and 1 x 4)
drill and forstner bit
screws
chair spindles or dowels
2 washers
2 nuts
plywood
2 bicycle training wheels
Steps:
1. Screw a piece of 1 x 2 along the bottom edge of each crate piece. This will help form a ledge for the bottom of the cart to rest on.
2. Cut two 1 x 4 pieces into three-foot lengths for the bottom side rails of the cart. For added sturdiness and to hold the cart bottom, screw a 1 x 2 strip along the bottom edge of each of these pieces as well.
3. Set the crate lids between the side rails and screw them in on all four corners .
4. Cut four 12-inch pieces of 1 x 4 wood. Position these side rails on each corner just above the long 1 x 4 rails and screw them in place after pre-drilling holes . Work around the cart until the sides are joined (figure A).
5. Pre-drill the desired amount of spindle holes with a forstner bit. Place the spindles in the holes.
6. Cut a top rail piece out of 1 x 4 wood three feet long plus about six inches . Shape one end into a handle. Pre-drill corresponding spindle holes as above and set the top rail in position. Once in place, screw the rail to the frame and finish the other side in the same way.
7. Turn the cart over. Cut two legs out of 1 x 2 pieces and pre-drill holes in them. Set the legs on the back of the cart and screw them in.
8. Attach training wheels by sliding them into a pre-drilled hole on each side of the front; add a washer, and then a nut to secure them.
9. Turn the cart over. Cut plywood to fit in the bottom and set it in place.
