Steps:

1. Build the main frame of the cabinet with two sides, the top and bottom plus a middle divider (the cabinet Matt Fox built is 36 x 72) (figure A). Drill pilot holes to avoid splitting the wood, and then use a counter bore before driving the screws in to hide the head.

2. For the top shelf, measure the distance between one side and the middle divider and cut a piece of 1x11 to length. Measure 17 inches down from the top; make a reference line with a carpenter's square, and then screw the board in place as above.

3. Repeat the same steps for the lower shelf (perfect for shoe storage) and attach it nine inches up from the bottom.

4. To repeat the top and bottom shelf procedure on the other side of the middle divider, measure as before and drill a pilot hole/counter bore at an angle on the front and back of the middle divider to hide the screws. Drive each screw in at an angle to attach the shelf (figure B). These will be hidden later with trim. Attach normally to the outer side board.

5. Attach 1x2 trim to all but the top edge using finish nails after drilling pilot holes.

6. Attach a 1x4 piece of pine across the top and finish it with decorative trim to make the top look more substantial (figure C).

7. Nail a piece of bead board paneling to cover the back.

8. Attach 1x4 boards to the top of the center opening for coat hooks. Paint the entire cabinet as desired and attach the hooks once dry.
