Video: Columns can be functional supports such as these, which should be built by a contractor, or a decorative element in a large doorway, just inside a room or in all four corners of a space.
Materials:

1x8 pine pieces
wood glue
screws
fluted lumber
1" lumber for cleats
finish nails
hammer
1x4, 1x3 and 1x2 lumber
sandpaper
pencil
non-shrinking spackle compound
primer
paint
paintbrushes

Steps:

1. Build a box made of 1x8 pieces cut to the desired length for an inside support form for the decorative column using glue and screws. For additional support, attach a one-inch cleat along the inside length of the column in each corner (figure A).

2. Center a fluted piece on the outside of the column and attach it with glue and finish nails. For a contemporary look, attach a 1x2 (to each side of the fluted piece) cut at a 45-degree angle along the length of one side so that the mitered corner of the adjoining piece gives it a nice square edge (figure B).

3. Glue and nail a series of decreasing sizes of lumber with mitered edges(starting with a 1x4, 1x3 and 1x2 at the bottom) to the top of the column (figure C).

4. Sand all the edges to remove pencil marks and splinters, trying not to soften the piece too much.

5. Fill all the holes with spackle and prime the column. Paint as desired once dry.
