Figure D
Shirley Horowitz shows how to decorate with furniture and accessories that include woven natural materials:
  • The use of woven materials on accessories such as lamps, chargers or trays adds texture to a room and creates interest. Put a woven leather lamp on a wood, marble or iron table (figure A).
  • This box from the orient is made of woven twine with silver accents (figure B).
  • Incorporate a charming painted Louis XVI caned chair for a lovely accent anywhere in the house. Use a pillow to protect the caning or make a wooden platform with a cushion attached to take the stress completely off the caned seat.
  • A French Louis XVI small walnut and cane table from 1880 is wonderfully suited for a chair side or for seating at a small vanity (figure B).
  • Use a basket with a woven rope base and a top made of coconut shell for a trashcan or dried plant arrangement.
  • Chairs made of woven water hyacinth have a beautiful grass-like texture and can be used in protected outdoor spots like a garden room, loggia or covered porch (figure C).
  • Place a bamboo walking stick with thin, finely woven reeds on top in an umbrella stand or large vase in an entry for long walks.
  • Fill an etegere made of woven rattan over bamboo with entertainment equipment , clothes or linens.
  • Display large woven chargers or trays on a mantel next to artwork (figure D ).
  • An Elizabethan bookstand with caned shelves can also be used as a quilt rack at the end of a bed.
