Figure A
The latest trend in home decor is using a mix of fabrics in upholstery. This style is unique and a lot of fun.
  • Upholstering a sofa or chair with various fabrics on different sections provides an interesting combination of patterns and textures (figure A).
  • This process is a way to bring many different fabrics into a space. Just make sure they are similar in weight by combining heavyweight upholsteries and tapestries or a variety of lightweight cottons because the fabric weight is going to react in the construction of the upholstery.

  • Keep the scale (size) of the patterns in mind when choosing a variety of fabrics for a piece and combine a large pattern with a smaller one to ensure the piece works.
  • For a more formal look, think less. The furniture itself may have straight lines and be upright so use fewer fabrics.
  • Even leather pieces lend themselves to this technique, making them less expensive (figure B).

    Figure C
  • People love to mix and match fabrics because it creates custom pieces that express their individual style.
  • Create this look without reupholstering by using different slipcovers together. Not only does this give the mix and match look, it can be removed or changed easily (figure C). Add a throw blanket with four sections (two of the same fabric and two complementary patterns) for another mixed touch.
