Bringing Iron Inside

Smart Design : Episode SDN-112 -- More Projects »
A popular trend is using materials once found only outdoors to make great furnishings for inside the home. Traditionally used for railings and window grills, wrought iron is an age-old material that's finding new life inside:
  • Wrought iron is a beautiful material that develops a lovely patina over time. It can be made into many shapes such as chairs, beds, tables, lamps, etc. and is a true classic that won't go out of style.

  • It's growing in popularity because it is being forged more delicately than it has been in the past, lending a light and contemporary touch to this heavy metal. Top a wrought iron base with glass for an airy look that highlights the design (figure A).

  • Any style home can take wrought iron furnishings--the design is what really matters. Use simple lines in a contemporary space and items with an old world charm for a more traditional one.
  • Use glass glue to adhere a mirror to a wrought iron pot rack for interesting dimension from every angle (figure B).
