Build a small side cabinet with simple materials and steps for extra storage and display space.
Materials:

1" x 8" poplar
1/2" plywood
circular saw
jigsaw
wood glue
clamp
stain
paint
nails
hammer
drawer runner (optional)

Steps:

1. Decide desired size and cut the body out of pieces of 1/2-inch plywood (two sides, back, top, bottom and shelf for the drawer). Glue and nail the pieces together.

2. Draw the desired design for the curved bottom pieces on paper or newspaper, and then cut it out. Transfer it to the poplar and cut three matching pieces out with a circular saw.

3. Leave the back plate plain since it's mainly a support piece for the body. Once the four pieces are put together, attach cleats to the underside (figure A). These will bring the two pieces together (the base and the body).

4. For the top, glue and clamp two pieces of lumber together for a large piece. Remove any glue that squeezes out after clamping if staining the piece. When it's dry, cut it to size with a one-inch overhang for the edges.

5. Use the template from Step 2 to make the curved back portion on the top, and then cut out two side wings. Attach them to the top from below.

6. Create a drawer by making a box with a face board that covers the front opening of the cabinet. Add a drawer runner if desired.

7. Stain and/or paint the piece as desired.
