Figure C
Host Renai Ellison shows how to turn a plain side chair into a field of flowers with designs and paints.

Materials:

old or discarded upholstered or partially upholstered chair (upholstery fabric needs to be without a nap; a flat weave such as canvas, chintz--a printed and glazed cotton fabric, usually of bright colors, twill, etc.)
gesso
chalk
flower imagery to use as inspiration
acrylic paints in colors of chosen floral image (Light-body metallic paint in green, light violet and gold was used on the show.)
assortment of large and small paintbrushes
stain-resistant spray fabric finish

Steps:

  1. You may want to cover over the old design on the chair with gesso (figure A) to create a blank slate on which to paint.

  2. Use chalk to create a field of blossoms onto the upholstered chair surface (figure B). Make images big and bold.

  3. Paint in the design (figure C). Keep the style loose and casual and cover the entire chair. Fill in the background areas with color.

  4. Let dry well and spray with fabric finish to resist stains.
