Mosaic Radiator Cover Bench

Video: This mosaic-topped bench covers a radiator in style.
Materials:

3/4" birch plywood
nails
wood glue
plates/tiles of similar thickness
mallet or hammer
towel
safety goggles
gloves
rubber float
grout
mastic
notched trowel
grout/tile sealer

Steps:

  1. Cut the top and two sidepieces to desired dimensions. Prime pieces and allow to dry.

  • Attach sides using glue and finish nails. Add trim to the front (figure A).

  • For the mosaic, wrap a plate one at a time in towel and smash it (figure B ). Be sure to wear gloves and safety goggles. Carefully place broken pieces into a box.

  • Place pieces in desired design before adhering. Arrange them until satisfied (figure C).

  • Apply mastic to the top of the bench and use a trowel to create notches, which allow for good adhesion (figure D).

  • Put tiles in place according to design. Push grout completely into spaces between pieces with float (figure E).
  • Clean tiles carefully with a rag. Allow to cure according to manufacturer's directions and seal.
