Materials:

piece of unfinished furniture
4 shades of paint
metallic paint
wood stain
pencil
painter's tape
matte medium
polyurethane

Some tips before you begin:

Choose paints that are in the same color scheme to make the piece look more like plaid.

Put the complementary shades closest together.

The metallic and wood stain should be next to each other.

Steps:

  1. Draw a plaid pattern on furniture with a pencil.
  2. Label the four shades of paint #1, #2, #5, and #6. #3 is the metallic paint and #4 is stained wood.
  3. Number each square lightly with a pencil, using two numbers per vertical row, and alternating them back and forth.
  4. Run painter's tape around all of the #1 squares. Paint the tape's inner edge with matte medium to prevent the paint from running.
  5. Then paint each #1 block with the number 1 color. Let dry.
  6. Repeat the process for the rest of the paint colors.
  7. Tape around the blocks left to be stained and rub the stain into the wood lightly .
  8. Let dry and seal the whole piece.
