*The color palette for this project includes:
buttercup yellow - sides of the cabinet and diamonds
lime green - inside cabinet and dots
kelly green - pepper tops
colonial red - pepper bodies and top of cabinet

Note: The design for this project featured three chili peppers outlined by diamonds. The bodies of the top and bottom chili peppers were hollow shapes, and the stems on each were raised. The entire middle pepper was also raised.

Caution: Always wear safety glasses when using drills, rotary tools, saws, etc. Practice using the scroll saw on a scrap piece of pine before cutting out the door design.

Steps:
  1. Purchase an inexpensive, unpainted cabinet from a local home center.
  2. Select a design or pattern, draw a thumbnail sketch of the design, and select the desired paint colors.
  3. Remove the door of the cabinet, and lightly sand the rough edges with medium grit sandpaper. If there are any imperfections in the cabinet, fill with wood filler, then sand.
  4. Begin with the door that has been removed. With a pencil, trace the design onto the door.
  5. To cut out the "bodies" or bottoms of the top and bottom chili peppers, use the scroll saw. To begin the interior cuts on the door, drill a small hole for a starting point on one of the two chili peppers.
  6. Thread the saw blade through the hole, set the saw on low speed, and cut out the design along the outline of the chili pepper that was traced onto the wood. As you become more comfortable with the saw, increase to the high speed.
  7. Once you've cut around the entire outline, remove the blade and then remove the cutout piece of wood. Repeat the process on the bottom chili pepper.
  8. Sand the rough edges of the two chili pepper cutouts using the rotary tool with a sanding band accessory.
  9. Using a scrap piece of pinewood cut out a complete chili pepper to use as the raised middle pepper, and cut out two "caps" or stems for the top and bottom chili peppers. Later, these will be glued onto the cabinet door.
  10. Use the rotary tool with the sanding band to smooth the edges of the complete chili pepper and two stems.
  11. On the door, using a thick tip (#473 Script, for example) in the wood burning tool to burn the outlines of the diamond patterns around the three chili peppers.
  12. Align a straightedge along the diamond lines, and use it as a guide when dragging the tip of the wood burning tool over the wood. Drag the tip toward you.
  13. Wood burn the stem outline on the complete chili pepper cut out.
  14. To create dimension on the cabinet door, use the rotary tool to create dots outside the diamonds.
  15. With the high-speed cutter in the rotary tool, make divots in the wood, and then smooth the edges of the divots or dots with sandpaper.
  16. Paint the cabinet and door according to the color scheme you've selected. Leave the area where the complete chili pepper and two stems will be glued unpainted.
  17. Paint the raised chili pepper and the two stem pieces. Do not paint the backs as this prevents the wood glue from adhering to the surface.
  18. Glue the completed chili pepper in the middle of the door, and glue the two stems to the top and bottom peppers.
  19. Cut two small pieces of mesh screen and use a staple gun to attach them to the back of the door behind the top and bottom chili pepper cut outs.
  20. Reattach the door to the cabinet.
