Pat Clemens, former editor of "Woman's Day Weekend Decorating Projects," transforms unpainted wood furniture into a finished "antique" in just a few hours.
Materials:
unpainted wood furniture
wall coverings and borders
green acrylic paint
water tray filled with lukewarm water
brayer roller
polyurethane
craft knife
paintbrush
#120-grit sandpaper
pencil
ruler
adhesive tape
Steps:
- Sand and wipe the piece of furniture to create a porous surface.
- With a sponge, evenly rub on and then wipe off the green paint, so that the grain of the wood shows through.
- Use the craft knife to cut motifs from the wall covering, then arrange the motifs on the furniture. Tape the designs in place and mark their positions. Miter the corners by overlapping the pieces of wallpaper and cutting diagonally through both. Remove the excess.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions for immersing the prepasted wall covering in water. Work with one piece of wallpaper at a time, then remove the tape, moisten the wall covering, and place it on the furniture where indicated. Roll a brayer over the paper to secure it to the furniture and remove any air bubbles. Let the paper dry.
- Paint the piece with two coats of polyurethane, allowing it to dry between coats.
