Turn an inexpensive bookcase into a beautiful and interesting display case for treasured objects.
Materials:

wooden two- or three-shelf bookcase
flat latex paint for base coat
paintbrushes
1/4" beadboard
wood glue
hammer
finish nails
stain
soft cloths
decorative moldings and rosettes
varnish
glass shelf/brackets (optional )
plug-in lighting fixtures (halogen, strip lighting, etc.) (optional)
drill (optional)

Steps:

1. Lay the bookcase down and glue pre-cut sheets of beadboard to the back of the bookcase. Let dry.

2. If desired, add brackets and glass shelf plus lighting fixture(s) following package directions. Drill a hole in the back or side for the cord.

3. Attach pre-cut molding pieces around front edges of bookcase using wood glue and finish nails (place a rosette in each upper corner, and then add the remaining pieces).

4. Paint entire bookcase inside and out with base coat. Let dry.

5. Brush stain over surface, wiping away excess to reveal painted surface underneath . Let dry.

6. Apply one or two coats of varnish for protection.
